London – Day 70 of lockdown

Signs for children for their 'bubbles' at school

A couple of schools near me have opened their doors to some students. Judging from the photo the students organise themselves into bubbles, I’m assuming to limit them mixing too much. It’s made all too real when you see newly painted lines on the footpath measuring the distance they should stand away from one another. This school has been open for the duration of lockdown for the children of essential workers.

A lot of people in the ‘shielding’ group, sent a text on Saturday evening telling them it was OK to go outside, remain at home. The text was sent centrally. It wasn’t done via local health services. Nor does it take into account varying infection rates across the country. From what I’ve said, GP surgeries have been inundated by calls from people who are anxious about the changes and what it means for them. I can appreciate why.

And today, new laws have been introduced in England. Apart from some limited exceptions, it’s now illegal to stay over at someone else’s place. It’s also illegal to have gatherings of two or more people in your home, or more than 6 people outdoors. Over the last few days, it feels as though government has been taking a carrot approach. It’s clearly shifted to taking a stick approach. It’s unclear as to how long this will last.

But it’s when you get into the detail that it gets confusing.

Another 111 deaths, bringing to total to 39,045. While it’s the lowest number in months, generally the figures are lower at the beginning of the week due to time delays in reporting over the weekend.

On the plus side, it’s been another day of glorious weather. Even with putting on 30+ every time I go out when it’s sunny, I’m working on some serious tan lines. Here’s to a chill evening. Enough writing for the day for me.

So that’s it for Day 70. Stay safe, stay well, and stay home!
