London – Day 91 of lockdown

day 91 of lockdown - facemask discarded on the street

A glorious day. And it’s due to get much hotter later in the week. Luckily I have a good stock of 30+. I’ve been out today a number of times for walks to clear my head. All in all, it’s been a pretty chill day.

When out and about, I see more and more people meeting up. Many are staying at a distance. Many aren’t.

Fifteen new deaths, the lowest figure for months. Though of course numbers are low on weekends and early in the week due to delays in reporting. This brings the total to 42,627.

We’ve not yet seen a second wave in the UK. There is still no data on the number of people who have been tested. At least for the public, we continue to have little sense also of where positive cases are popping up. This is critical to planning local responses.

Tomorrow there are further announcements likely to include a lessening of social distancing requirements from 2 metres to 1 metre. Pubs may reopen soon.

And we may start seeing the first of local lockdowns. In Wales, a local lockdown in Anglesey could be enforced to get the outbreak at a food factory in Llangefni under control. Again in Wales, it’s been revealed that at the start of lockdown, over 1,000 people were sent from hospital to care homes without being tested. There will be a similar picture I suspect across the UK.

Local councils and local governments are increasingly concerned about the financial impact of Covid-19. Unless they get more money, there could be further cuts to adult social services and children’s services.

In many ways, we’re only in ‘Phase 1’ with no certainty about how many phases there may be. It feels like being about mile 18 of a marathon when my question is ‘will this ever end?’. I think with this we’re more like at about mile 8…

So that’s it for Day 91. Stay safe, stay well, and stay home (or at least stay safe when you’re out and about)!
