Pre-training training – Part 1

#gymlife - photo of shoes, water bottle etc

Or perhaps I should call it gymlife, this pre-training training lark!

At the moment I’m getting my butt into gear to start training for marathon number 3 next year (an an ultra a few weeks later). I’ve found an 18 week schedule which kicks off in about 8 weeks.

I’m getting back to basics.

This year I’ve been sidelined by injury – a dodgy knee. But slowly, oh so slowly, I’m on the mend. I’m now at the gym pretty much daily. I don’t know if my plan will work. While I’ll be deeply disappointed if I don’t manage to take up my deferred places from the London Marathon, and Guernsey Ultra, I’ll at least know I’ve done what I can.

But either way, on the plus side, I’ve learned to love the gym.

A lot has changed…

I used to hate the thought of the gym. But after months of injury, and finally following my physio’s advice, I put on my big girl pants and signed up 6 months ago. Up until the last month or so I’ve been pretty lax. While going to the gym a couple of times a week, I was unfocused. Maybe I needed that time.

But no more. I’m working on building strength and cardio. And I’ve started noticing some real changes – I’m stronger, I have more energy, and running feels good again.

Most of my runs are on the treadmill. Not the most exciting way to run but it’s less impact on my dodgy knee while I get stronger. At least there are videos of running through the countryside to look at!

I’m also doing a lot of stairclimbing – I believe there are one or two at the Guernsey Ultra! Also, it’s good for running generally.

This is what I’ve been up to over the last fortnight.

Happy running all!

  1. I’m glad you’ve got good treadmills with a view on the screen – the ones at my gym are very old fashioned and I keep thinking of joining the one up the road which does have that stuff. Best of luck with your pre-hab!

    1. Thanks Liz. And there’s one video of a route that makes me laugh every time…there’s a herd of cows you pass through – if it was real life I’m not sure I’d be doing the same 🙂
