Yep, a huge issue. A few hours is fine but... and really problematic for so many people. Prior to all of this, there were already significant problems with the closing of lots of public toilets. The challenge will be how do you re-open them safely....

The public toilets thing is huge, though. It's the limitation to me getting to lots of places! I am OK with the hair and don't have any family, but I would like to see my best friend in London one day (she could drive to see me if there were public toilets, of course).

Nice goat - very cheering! I managed to do 10.3 miles today on a really muggy morning as my friend I run with quite a lot has decided she wants to try for a half-marathon distance soon. It was still good, if sticky, just to get the time together! And the social distancing on the streets was good-natured and competent, much better than it used to be, not sure why.

So sorry about your back and hope it improves really soon. I walked 8.5 miles today to meet one friend in a park and walk to another friend's house where we sat in her garden for a bit and chatted. I will do that and I will run with one other person and go to the supermarket, but not broadening it out any more than that.

Thanks Peter, hopefully the physio trip will have done the trick. And yes, the UK government's policy on handling all of this has been an absolute disaster...no words. Very pleased though with how things are in Aus, though won't comment on every other gov policy :) I hope things are getting back to relatively normal for you.

Sorry to hear about your back!
Re policy: it seems clear that your Government's policy is basically to grab this opportunity to reduce the population of non-politicians.
Best to have your own policy and stick to it.

I'm continuing to do what I'm doing now - meet or run with one friend at a distance, shop twice a week between us (we go to different shops rather than one of us potentially cross-infecting two shops) and not go out or see people over that. The half of people self-isolate statistic horrified me!

Love the idea of reading the same book - brilliant! Yep, really not enjoying the fact that I have no idea if I'll have a good day or a not so good day...it's the random stuff, the unexpected moments where I cry which is very unlike me. It's not depression, I know what that is, it's this underlying existential angst which I think we're all living with at the moment, and it is the occasional 'surprise' at not being able to do those normal things, give someone a hug, sit closer than 2 metres away etc. But tomorrow is likely to be completely different... very strange times....

Very cool re the street art. And I'm sorry about your friend. I'm feeling the loss of those everyday things very much at the moment. However, instead of doing a video call with my best friend who lives in London when we were both a bit frazzled yesterday, we both sat down in our respective homes and read the same book. We shared a photo of ourselves and read a chapter or two, discussed it on Messenger, and we're going to sort out another chapter soon. That was lovely, maybe because it was entirely different to what we'd do in non-lockdown times. I enjoyed reading a few books along with some blog connections last month after people picked books out of my TBR to read, and this was an even nicer version of that.

I'm really up and down too though.

Brilliant!!! And yep, there are some woods near me that in normal times I wouldn't run there alone during the week, weekends were fine. Yep, and I think we're all learning the art of patience as there's no point stressing about it all! Happy days :)

It was lovely, thank you: we stayed safe and we got to run on some secluded traily bits we both won't go down on our own. When we had encounters with people and had to step aside or wait, it was FAR better with two of us there somehow, more something to go grrrr about than something to be upset by.

Yep, I really don't get the protests. I would if they were about jobs losses etc, but the idea that the government can't tell us what to do (within limits of course) is absurd. And to protest is an important right but doing so in these strange times ... and it's not just their health they're risking but those of police, public transport workers, so many others...
And yes, meeting up with my friend was awesome. We'll be doing it regularly, rules permitting. :)

I hope you had a great run and a catch up. And yes, I get entirely that the idea of being able to go out more than once a day is important. Thankfully lots of quiet streets around me so it's comfortable to do.
And yes, it is too close to home. And it's sad and infuriating, and a reminder of why we need to continue with lockdown.

We had one of those stupid, awful protests really close to here, in one of the parks I regularly run through. It really upset me to see pictures of it - however the main discussions I saw on the local groups (so outside my own bubble as membership is very mixed) was mainly against them, which gave me hope.

How lovely to be able to meet your friend! Hooray!

Here the weather isn't so good which is a blessing. I'm about to go on my first run with another person - we're both v careful, neither has even been near someone who we know has the virus, and we'll keep our distance. I'm excited but nervous.

Lillian Mudzivare, the other healthcare worker who died in Birmingham recently, was on my friend Jo's new team, although she never got to meet her as she was already ill when she took over. Too close to home again. Thank you for honouring our victims.

And I'm glad going out little and often is helping. I've not actually done that bit yet; it seems enough to know I can, if that makes sense?

I'm glad you've got some more walks in, that's lovely and a real bonus for you. I've only been out once a day yesterday and today, amusingly. The back to work thing is a farce and awful - a friend of mine's husband was forced to go in even though he was working on most of his stuff from home, and had to get the bus, which he was really stressed about. However, he has a (hayfever-related, annually occurring) slight cough so ... they sent him straight home again!

I'm hoping realistically for being let out for exercise more than once a day (esp as we have incredibly noisy builders in next door at the moment) and would just love if we could go out with one trusted friend, mainly because weirdly I could then access remoter trails I wouldn't feel safe on on my own!

I've read all your posts, but I've got behind so I've read them today. Keep on keeping on, one day at a time or in my case a week of planning when to run, is the new manageable. I love this picture and I adore the Horniman and long to return there!

Interesting and yes, real concerns about lack of support and resources. Thanks for the ref, and have read. And how was it ever the case that often frail and elderly people, those at highest risk, were discharged from hospitals into care homes without testing? No words, just a sense of rage.
I'm so pleased your friend has been discharged and on the mend, must have been terrifying for all concerned.
And I know, there's something about London marathon day which is truly special....one day

"I’m confused by how little we’re hearing in the media from the frontline, particularly from care homes, and from paramedics and others who will be called out to deaths in the home." - I'm not. I have a couple of friends who are nurses and a friend who has been hospitalised (and is out again and well) and it's absolutely horrific but a lot of that is down to the lack of support and resources, so no way are the media going to stir that up, I'd suggest. There is some detail in the Phil Whittaker column in the New Statesman - I'm not sure if that is put out on their website though as I have a subscription.

And good news on the gentle running. I was sad to miss being in the crowds supporting my friends. I will go down whenever they end up running it anyway.

Precisely. The other day I saw a woman in I think an uber, from what I saw, she was taking off a glove with her teeth....oh dear god, you couldn't make it up. and yep, same with folks using gloves and touching their face repeatedly...and precisely on masks protecting others from us, rather than us from 'them'

I've noticed that about masked people, too. Also gloved people touching their faces - what??? We have cloth masks a local woman made and is giving away. But we know they are to protect others from us and not us from others.

I had a terrible day yesterday as I had to go and buy vitamins and toiletries (haven't done either for 7 weeks) and there was not good social distancing in Savers and I got very panicky when I got stuck trying to obey arrows on the floor everyone else was not obeying. Cried all the way home behind my sunglasses and buff-as-a-mask. Ugh. Today is better as I had a nice run though dashed as set out a bit late.

Good work on the gardening. And on the social distancing, at least where I am, people seem a lot more aware now. Also I think a lot of people are choosing to not go out, at least those who can.

I was so upset over TBT, it really got to me. I did manage to do gardening with husband and finally plant the seeds I've had for a while, I don't believe they'll work but we'll see ...

On a plus point I only went anywhere near two people on my 3 mile run this morning. Bank holiday or genuine progress?

Cheers Sarah. And yep, I'm getting crabby over all sorts of things, we're in strange times. And yay, apply trees are awesome. I was so pleased to get to go into an orchard yesterday, albeit it's tiny and it's all pretty new trees, it was really lovely. And have fun growing stuff! I'm hoping to keep a potted mint plant alive for a while. Have a fab evening, Soph :)

Thank you for diary day 20
I am so saddened to read the passing of Tim Brooke-Taylor. He was my favourite Goodie ! I have been trying to make bread today and it put me in such a crabby mood ! I wonder if it is because it is so humid today and a storm is forecasted ? I finally got over myself by going in the small garden which we are so lucky to have and watering my two little Apple trees. One has so many flowers about to bloom -it smells amazing! And having a go and growing veggies from scraps like spring onions and tomato seeds in pots Hope you have a great evening

Thanks Liz. And ah dear, some of the positive posts ... I'm of the school of thought it's important to acknowledge how we're feeling, and sometimes I do wander around my flat or on my daily walk for exercise saying 'this is all shit', at other times I'm dancing around my flat to bad music and having a laugh with people I know who I sometimes cross paths with outside. And hello to Birmingham!!! Soph

And ah dear, some of the positive posts … I’m of the school of thought it’s important to acknowledge how we’re feeling, and sometimes I do wander around my flat or on my daily walk for exercise saying ‘this is all shit’, at other times I’m dancing around my flat to bad music and having a laugh with people I know who I sometimes cross paths with outside. And hello to Birmingham!!! Soph

Thanks Sarah, I'll be fine. I get over my grumps reasonably quickly. And another 12 weeks, sending big virtual hugs, I can't even begin to imagine what that's like. Thankfully I'm fairly good at sleeping :) Are you able to do video chats? I've suggested to a friend of mine that we start having coffee breaks over video. Here's to some good sleep for you! Soph

Thanks for sharing your lockdown diary . We here in Birmingham are in self isolation now for 2nd week and I need to extend that for another 12 weeks (no face to face contact with people from outside our house hold and not leaving home now ) as I am immune compromised. I am ok during the day but can’t sleep at night ! Thank god for audio books on you tube ! So sorry to hear that, that's really rough. To be honest, and I never thought I'd say it, going to the gym has been a life saver for me with my current dodgy other knee....it means I can work on injury prevention + strengthening, and keep up some level of fitness, albeit a lot of it not directly running related but will benefit my running. Well worth chatting to your physio/PT to see what they'd advise.

Oh dear, sorry to hear you're poorly. I'm trying not to panic about my ultra training as I got a cold on Christmas Eve, didn't run for a week as pretty poorly, but have been left with a cough. I am OK when running and taking it gently but cough when I stop running, and am just trying to be patient - can't do yoga or strength training as I cough if I lie on my back, do pressups etc. Argh! Here's to a swift recovery!

Fantastic and glad to hear the training is going well. On the core exercises, it's a whole mix of things, mostly pilates type moves including 'imprinting' and scissors. Most of them I have no idea what they're called. I'll do a post at some point and scan in some of the exercises I've been given! Happy running Liz!

I'm training for the Liverpool RnR marathon in late May and beyond that my ultra in July. I'm planning to train for the mara as usual, recover but then do some back to back weekend running to keep myself ticking over for the ultra. I did a 10 mile run today and actually felt OK, finally over my cough, so time to build up and get back into my strength training.

What core exercises are you doing every day? Interesting to know!

I'm doing the second day of Race to the Stones which is the least terrifying one we could come up with to try! I'm blogging once a week about running on my personal blog so will include race reports when it's time. Gulp!

Exciting! I failed in our club ballot but I will be doing Liverpool, which fits my ultra a lot better (end of May / mid-July) and I will be down cheering at London again, which I love doing. Best of luck with your training.

Yes, its agony for me too this time of the year.
I wonder how many burst into song.
Please Mister Postman, look and see.
Is there a letter in your bag for me.
So many years you passed me by.
Please check and see just one more time.
Will it have to be another charity application?

Thanks Neil, and very true! It's important to learn the lessons...I think the main one for the 50k I did was to experiment more with hydration and nutrition during long races. And the point you made about being OK with it in terms of what you were thinking at the start of the race is a great one. Wishing you the best for your future races - let me know how you get on!

I am returning from a bad ankle injury and did my first half-marathon since then, which was going great for 10 miles - I was tootling along well and on course for a two-hour run.
But after 10 miles, I lost it big time and felt like I could barely run a step. Despite telling myself it was only a parkrun to do, I ran-walked over the line to finish in two house six minutes, with the extra six minutes coming in those last few miles as my pace dropped off.
While I was gutted with the ending, I took comfort with my time overall (I'd have accepted that at the start of the race) and that I was back in the ballpark of my pre-injury half. My first one then was a 2:03, so not too far away.
And I focused on what I needed to do to stop that happening next time, which meant better training as well as altering my diet and doing a bit more gym work. There's always something constructive you can take from a bad run (or part of run)
